Chapter 9 - The Chessboard of the Underworld

By midnight, my mother was safely tucked into the guest suite, exhausted from her journey, while the penthouse transformed once again into a command center.

The living room lights were dimmed, casting long, sharp shadows across the modern furniture. Gabriel stood near the entrance with a secure laptop open, while two armed security operatives monitored the private elevator feeds from the foyer.

Lucas stood by the kitchen island, pouring a cup of black coffee, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line.

"How much time do we have before Sterling realizes his accounts are exposed?" Lucas asked without turning around.

"His primary Swiss accounts were frozen at midnight under federal anti-money laundering statutes," Gabriel reported crisply, tapping keys on his keyboard. "He’s currently holed up in his private estate in Lake Geneva, trying to liquidate his secondary assets and secure private transport out of the country."

"He’s running," I said, walking over to stand beside Lucas, resting a hand gently on his arm. "Shouldn't we let the FBI handle him? You said federal prosecutors are already involved."

Lucas turned to look down at me, placing his coffee cup on the marble counter. He reached up, gently cupping my face with his large hand.

"The FBI moves too slowly, Emma," Lucas said softly, his voice fierce with protective devotion. "They deal in warrants, red tape, and years of court appeals. Victor Sterling tried to kill my wife and poison my unborn son. He doesn't get a trial in two years. He gets dismantled tonight."

"What do you need to do?"

"I need to cut off his escape routes," Lucas said, turning back to Gabriel. "Mobilize our private logistics teams at the O'Hare and Midway private airfields. Ground every charter flight flagged under Sterling’s shell companies. And notify the port authorities along the Chicago River—if he tries to slip out via Lake Michigan toward Canada, intercept him before he reaches international waters."

"Consider it done, Mr. Bennett," Gabriel nodded sharply, turning and heading out toward the security detail.

I looked up at my husband, feeling a strange mix of fear and absolute awe. The billionaire hotelier who ran boardrooms with polite smiles was gone, replaced by the apex predator who had built an empire from the ground up and would burn the world to ashes to protect his family.

"You're going to confront him yourself, aren't you?" I asked quietly.

Lucas didn't deny it. He pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my hair, inhaling deeply.

"I have to, Emma," he murmured against my ear. "As long as Victor Sterling breathes free air, I will never truly feel like you and Leo are safe. I have to finish this once and for all."

"Be careful," I whispered, tears pricking my eyes. "I just got you back. I just got our family back. Don't let him take that away from us."

"I am too stubborn to die, Emma," Lucas smiled faintly, pulling back to look into my eyes. "I have a wonderful wife, a newborn son, and a mother-in-law who makes the best roasted chicken in Wisconsin. I'm not going anywhere."

He kissed me deeply, a fierce, desperate promise of return, before turning and walking briskly toward the private elevator with Gabriel trailing close behind.
