Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trial

The following afternoon, the private conference room on the top floor of Bennett Towers felt like a courtroom convened in the underworld.

The massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked a gray, rain-swept Chicago, but inside, the atmosphere was stifling. Seated around the mahogany table were the senior partners of Bennett Enterprises, alongside corporate auditors and federal investigators who owed their careers to Lucas's patronage.

At the far end of the table sat Margaret and Richard.

Margaret still wore her designer wool coat, though her hair was slightly disheveled and her hands trembled as she clutched her handbag. Richard looked defeated, staring blankly at the polished wood in front of him.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Lucas walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual corporate smile. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his face carved from ice, carrying a heavy metal briefcase. I walked in right beside him, leaning on his arm, my legs finally wrapped in supportive braces, but my posture unyielding.

"Lucas, darling, what is the meaning of this theatrical nonsense?" Margaret attempted to project authority, though her voice wavered. "Dragging us down here while you coddle your little—"

"Silence, Margaret," Lucas snapped, setting the briefcase on the table with a heavy thud.

He popped open the latches and pulled out three thick files, tossing them across the table toward his aunt and cousin.

"Financial audits, medical forensics, and forged legal affidavits," Lucas said, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "For the past six months, you conspired to poison my wife, falsify guardianship documents, and stage a medical emergency to usurp parental rights over my unborn child."

"That is a complete fabrication!" Richard protested, half-standing from his chair. "You have no direct proof linking us to the medical administration!"

"Really, Richard?" Lucas pressed a button on the wall console.

The massive projection screen behind the table flickered to life. Audio recording played—clear, crisp, and damning.

“Just increase the dosage of the neurotoxin this week,” Margaret’s voice echoed clearly through the boardroom speakers from a recorded phone call tapped two days prior. “Once she’s bedridden and hysterical, Lucas will believe she’s losing her mind. Then Richard files the emergency custody petition citing maternal incapacity. The baby becomes ours, the trust remains intact, and the baker's daughter disappears quietly.”

The conference room went dead silent. The senior partners exchanged horrified glances, sliding their chairs away from Margaret and Richard as if physical distance could absolve them of the association.

Margaret turned completely pale, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

"You... you recorded us?" she whispered in horror.

"I record every secure line in this building," Lucas said coldly. "And now, so do the federal prosecutors waiting outside."

The side doors opened instantly, and two federal marshals stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the harsh office lights.

"Margaret Bennett. Richard Vance," the lead marshal announced, stepping forward with steel handcuffs ready. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit premeditated poisoning, wire fraud, and forgery."

As they were hauled out of the boardroom, Margaret screamed curses while Richard kept his head bowed, completely broken by the realization that their greed had utterly destroyed them.

I watched them go, letting out a long, shuddering breath I felt like I had been holding for months.

Lucas wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side.

"It's over," he murmured into my hair. "They can never hurt you or our family again."
