Chapter 10 - The Final Checkmate

The storm broke over Chicago around 3:00 AM.

Lightning flashed across the dark expanse of Lake Michigan, illuminating the rain-streaked glass of our penthouse windows. I sat in the rocking chair in the nursery, holding Leo close against my chest while my mother slept peacefully down the hall. Every crash of thunder echoed like a distant gunshot in my mind, amplifying the agonizing silence of waiting.

I checked my phone for the hundredth time. No messages. No updates.

Just trust him, I told myself, rocking back and forth. He built this empire. He will protect us.

Suddenly, the secure comms tablet on the nursery wall blinked to life with a quiet, flashing blue light.

I stood up, walking over and tapping the screen.

Gabriel’s face appeared on the high-definition monitor, standing inside a dimly lit, high-security hangar at a private airfield outside Chicago. In the background, rain poured down over a sleek, private Gulfstream jet whose landing gear had been immobilized by heavy steel clamps.

And kneeling on the concrete floor near the jet's boarding stairs, surrounded by armed security operatives, was Victor Sterling.

The once-untouchable shipping tycoon looked disheveled, his expensive overcoat soaked in rain, his face twisted in desperate rage as two guards kept him pinned to the ground.

Then, the camera angle shifted.

Lucas walked into the frame. He wore his dark cashmere sweater, looking completely calm, holding a heavy manila folder in one hand. He stopped a few feet away from Victor, looking down at him with the cold, absolute authority of a man who owned the very ground his enemy was kneeling on.

"You can't do this, Bennett!" Victor shouted over the roar of the rain and wind. "I have political connections! I have international syndicates backing me! You'll never get away with a black-bag kidnapping!"

Lucas didn't yell. He didn't even raise his voice. But through the microphone on the monitor, every word carried a lethal, chilling clarity.

"You didn't just play a corporate game, Victor," Lucas said quietly, crouching down to be at eye level with the panicked man. "You crossed the one line that guaranteed your total destruction. You touched my wife. You poisoned my home."

"It was business!" Victor sneered, spitting on the concrete. "Margaret and Richard came to me! They wanted the trust!"

"And you gave them the weapons to destroy an innocent woman," Lucas replied, his voice dropping an octave. "Federal marshals are pulling up to the hangar gates right now, Victor. Your accounts are frozen, your ships are impounded, and your assets belong to Bennett Enterprises. You will spend the rest of your life in a federal box, watching your empire get auctioned off piece by piece."

Victor’s face crumpled into sheer, unadulterated terror as the wail of police sirens began to echo in the distance, growing louder by the second.

"Take him away," Lucas commanded softly.

Gabriel and the guards hauled Victor to his feet, dragging him away toward the flashing red and blue lights of the arriving federal cruisers parked outside the hangar.

May you like

Lucas stood alone in the center of the frame for a moment, looking directly into the security camera lens, knowing I was watching from the penthouse.

He gave a slow, reassuring nod.
