Chapter 2 - The Lobby Confrontation

The rain-slicked pavement outside the high-rise lobby reflected the flashing red and blue lights of the ambulance, casting eerie shadows across the marble floors. Inside, the air was freezing, but the chill coming off Lucas Bennett was absolute zero.

He didn’t release my hand as the paramedics maneuvered the stretcher toward the exit. His knuckles were white, his jaw set in a rigid line that promised total destruction.

And waiting right in the center of the lobby, standing beneath the crystal chandelier with immaculate posture and a look of manufactured concern, was Margaret Bennett.

Beside her, holding a thick, leather-bound legal folder tucked neatly under his arm, stood Richard.

"Lucas, darling," Margaret said, her voice dripping with practiced maternal distress as she glided forward. "We heard an ambulance was called. Is everything all right with the girl? I told you, her constitution was never strong enough for high society, let alone carrying a Bennet heir."

Richard stepped up beside his aunt, his thin lips curving into that familiar, oily smile that had made my skin crawl since the day I met him.

"Calm down, Aunt Margaret," Richard said smoothly, his eyes darting toward me on the stretcher before locking onto Lucas. "Cousin, you know how hysterical bakers' daughters get when minor complications arise during pregnancy. We came as soon as we heard. I brought the emergency guardianship paperwork just in case the medical team determines—"

"Shut up," Lucas said.

The two words weren't shouted. They were spoken in a low, lethal whisper that stopped Richard dead in his tracks.

Lucas let go of my hand for just a fraction of a second, stepping in front of the stretcher like a protective wall. The paramedics instinctively paused, sensing the sudden, violent shift in the room's atmosphere.

"Lucas, what on earth is wrong with your tone?" Margaret frowned, her polished mask slipping for a split second. "We are only trying to protect the family name and ensure the child—"

"You have spent the last six months telling my wife that I distrusted her," Lucas interrupted, his voice rising, vibrating with controlled rage. "You had your private nurse visit our penthouse under the guise of prenatal care while I was at the boardrooms, injecting her with slow-acting neurotoxins and sedatives to mimic high-risk complications. You bruised her legs, terrified her, and made her believe I had abandoned her."

Margaret gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "That is an absurd accusation! The girl is clearly unhinged—"

"And you, Richard," Lucas continued, turning his glare onto his cousin, his eyes pitch black with fury. "You drafted forged custody relinquishment papers, using my forged signature, claiming I consented to surrender my child to the family trust if anything happened to Emma."

Richard’s smile finally vanished. He clutched the leather folder tighter against his chest. "Lucas, you're not thinking clearly. The stress of your company's expansion—"

"Give me the folder, Richard," Lucas demanded, holding out his hand.

"I cannot do that. As chief legal counsel for the estate—"

Before Richard could finish his sentence, Lucas moved with terrifying speed. He lunged forward, grabbing Richard by the lapels of his expensive Italian suit, slamming him hard against the marble pillar behind him. The leather folder slipped from Richard's hands, scattering dozens of legal documents across the wet floor.

"Lucas! Stop this madness at once!" Margaret shrieked, panic finally cracking her composed exterior.

"If my wife or my child does not walk out of that hospital completely unharmed," Lucas whispered inches from Richard's terrified face, "I will strip you of every cent, dismantle your law license, and throw you into a federal penitentiary before sunrise. Do you understand me?"

Richard swallowed hard, nodding frantically.

Lucas shoved him back, picked up the scattered papers without glancing at them, and turned back to the stretcher. He took my trembling hand again, his thumb gently stroking my wrist.

"Let's go," Lucas told the paramedics, his voice softening instantly when he looked down at me. "I'm right here with you, Emma. No one is ever touching you again."
