Chapter 3 - The Hospital Detox and the Unravelling

The private VIP wing of Chicago Memorial Hospital felt like a fortress.

By 4:00 AM, the toxicology panel results were locked in the attending physician's office, confirming my worst fears and validating every nightmare I had lived through over the past three months.

"It was a targeted, synthetic compound," Dr. Vance explained, standing at the foot of my hospital bed while holding a glowing tablet. "Administered in small, controlled doses through subcutaneous injections or specialized vitamin supplements. It causes severe fluid retention, deep muscular bruising, and simulates acute gestational distress without leaving obvious needle traces. If she had stayed on bed rest for another week under that 'nurse's' care... her heart would have given out."

Lucas sat in the leather chair beside my bed, his head bowed, his hands clasped tightly together. Every muscle in his broad shoulders was tense.

"Who authorized the nurse?" Lucas asked, his voice dead and hollow.

"The estate's medical registry," Dr. Vance replied quietly. "Approved under a secondary authorization code. The same code assigned to senior administrative partners."

Richard’s code.

Lucas stood up slowly. He didn't say a word. He walked out into the private corridor, where I heard the muffled, furious sounds of him placing a call to his head of security.

"Bring Richard and Margaret to the estate's private security vault by noon," Lucas commanded over the phone. "And detain Nurse Hayes. I want every asset frozen, every bank account audited, and every communication log pulled from the past six months."

He walked back into the room, pulling a chair closer to my bed and sitting down. The anger in his eyes had subsided, replaced by a deep, shattering sorrow.

"Emma," he whispered, taking my hand and pressing his forehead against my knuckles. "I am so sorry."

Tears spilled over my lashes. "You didn't know, Lucas. They made it look like you signed everything. They told me you were ashamed of my background, that you were just waiting for an excuse to take the baby and send me back to Wisconsin."

"I could never be ashamed of you," he vowed fiercely, kissing my palm. "You are my entire world. When I looked at you from bakeries to boardrooms, all I ever wanted was to build a real home with you. I was so blind... I thought keeping you in the penthouse protected you from my world. I didn't realize the danger was already sitting at my own dinner table."

"What are we going to do with them?" I asked, looking up at him.

Lucas's eyes hardened into polished obsidian.

"They thought they were playing a corporate game of chess to seize control of the family trust through our child," he said softly. "They forgot who built this empire."
