Chapter 5 - The Storm Approaches

The peace was fragile, and it wasn't long before the world came knocking.
Ethan’s business was in a period of intense upheaval. A hostile takeover was brewing, orchestrated by a group of men who saw his recent "distractions" as a sign of weakness. They wanted to strip the company, sell the assets, and leave Ethan with nothing.
They sent lawyers, they sent threats, and eventually, they sent someone to his house to "discuss matters privately."
Ethan was in his study when Marcus entered, his face grim. "Mr. Caldwell, there’s a man here. He doesn't have an appointment. He says he’s from the firm you’re dealing with."
Ethan stood up. "Let him in."
The man who entered was slick, polished, and carried a briefcase that smelled of bad intentions. He sat down without waiting for an invitation.
"Mr. Caldwell," the man said, sliding a folder across the desk. "You’ve been... distracted. Your personal life is starting to affect your professional reputation. Hiring housekeepers with questionable backgrounds, neglecting the office... it’s not a good look for a CEO."
Ethan looked at the folder, then at the man. "Is that a threat?"
"It’s a friendly suggestion," the man said, smiling like a shark. "Step down. Sell your shares. Walk away with your dignity, and we won't have to look into the... personal lives of your staff."
Ethan’s blood ran cold. "My staff has nothing to do with this."
"You’d be surprised," the man said, leaning in. "We know about Julia Bennett. We know about her past. We know she’s a disgraced musician who left a trail of broken promises. We could destroy her life, Ethan. And that little boy? He wouldn't stand a chance."
Ethan felt a surge of rage so intense it nearly blinded him. He stood up, towering over the man. "If you ever come near them again, I will personally see to it that you never work in this city, or any other, ever again. Do you understand?"

The man stood up, unbothered. "We’ll be in touch, Ethan. Think about your legacy."
As the man left, Ethan stood in the silence of his study, his hands shaking. He had built his life on power, but he realized that power was nothing if it couldn't protect the people he cared about.
