Chapter 9 - The Recovery

The surgery was a complete success.

Two months later, the Florida sun was bright, reflecting off the calm waters of Key Biscayne.

David, Leo, and Maria stood on the wooden deck of a beautiful, accessible ground-floor apartment David’s foundation had helped the Rodriguez family secure near the beach.

Jorge Rodriguez sat in a lightweight wheelchair, his legs wrapped in light therapeutic braces, but his face was radiant with a massive, joyful smile. He was holding a fishing rod, teaching Leo how to cast the line into the gentle surf below the deck.

"Look, Dad!" Leo shouted, his face bright with excitement as the line splashed into the water. "Jorge says we’re going to catch a giant fish today!"

"I have no doubt you will, buddy," David laughed, walking over to stand beside Maria, who was preparing a large tray of fresh empanadas and grilled corn.

There were no tiny plastic containers today. The table was piled high with food, laughter, and the noisy, beautiful chaos of a family reunited in health and security.
