Chapter 8 - The Delivery

The next morning at 8:15 AM, a courier arrived at the penthouse.

Inside the envelope was a fully executed settlement agreement from Apex Infrastructure, accompanied by a certified bank draft for $500,000 made out directly to Jorge and Maria Rodriguez.

David held the check in his hand, feeling a sense of clean, genuine accomplishment that no successful app launch or stock options vest had ever given him.

When Maria arrived at 8:30 AM, she went straight to the kitchen to begin her duties. She looked tired, but there was a quiet, stable energy about her now, fueled by the daily meals David’s chef had been preparing for her family.

"Maria," David called out, stepping into the kitchen.

She turned around, a polishing cloth in her hand. "Yes, Mr. Miller?"

David walked over and placed the envelope on the marble island, sliding it toward her. "This is from Apex Infrastructure. The surgery for your husband is scheduled for next Tuesday at the Miami Orthopedic Institute. It’s completely paid for."

Maria looked at the document, her hands trembling as she opened the envelope. She saw the figures, the signatures, and the official seal of the court. She dropped the cloth, her knees giving out as she sat heavily on the kitchen stool, sobbing into her hands.

"I don't... I don't know how to repay you, sir," she wept. "I can clean this house for the rest of my life, and it will never be enough."

"You don't owe me anything, Maria," David said, his own eyes misty. "You taught my son how to be kind. That is worth more than any money I could ever earn."
