Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The meeting was set for 6:00 PM.

The CEO of Apex Infrastructure, a slick, arrogant man named Victor Vance, arrived at the penthouse wearing a tailored suit and a smirk that suggested he believed this was a standard corporate networking event.

"David, my friend!" Victor said, extending his hand as he walked into the sprawling living room. "It’s an honor to be here. Your penthouse has the best view in the entire city."

David didn't shake his hand. He gestured to the dining table, where a single folder sat under the soft light of the chandelier.

"Sit down, Victor," David said, his voice cold.

Victor’s smile faltered slightly, but he sat, his lawyer taking the chair beside him. "I assume this is about the smart-city contract? We are ready to break ground as soon as you sign the authorization."

"This is about Jorge Rodriguez," David said, sliding the folder across the table.

Victor blinked, his eyes scanning the name on the front of the file. "Who? I don't know who that is. We have thousands of laborers, David. If this is some minor HR issue, my legal team can—"

"He was a human being who fell from your unsafe scaffolding because your manager wanted to save forty-eight hours on a deadline," David cut him off, his voice rising, echoing through the quiet penthouse. "You denied his medical claims, forged his safety waiver, and left his wife to clean my floors while starving herself so she could buy his pain medication."
