By the end of the week, the formal divorce petition was filed and served directly to Jack’s public defender at the county detention center.
There was no contest. There was no courtroom battle. Jack had no leverage, no money for high-priced defense lawyers, and no allies left. His mother refused to speak to him, blaming him for dragging her into a federal criminal conspiracy, and Ashley had blocked his number entirely.
The terms of the settlement were devastatingly simple: absolute relinquishment of all marital property, total forfeiture of any claim to my pre-marital assets, and a permanent restraining order keeping him away from me forever.
Gerald handed me the final signed decree on Friday afternoon.
