Chapter 5 - The Clean Break

I turned away from the glass railing, walking toward the terminal exit with a steady, unhurried stride. The heavy wool of my coat brushed against my knees, and for the first time in ten years, I felt completely weightless.
As I stepped out into the crisp Dallas air, a sleek black town car idled by the curb. The rear door swung open instantly.
Gerald sat inside, adjusting his silver-rimmed glasses, a warm, approving smile touching his lips as I slid into the leather seat beside him.
"Flight’s delayed, I assume?" Gerald asked, handing me a fresh cup of black coffee.
"Something like that," I replied, taking the cup and watching the Dallas/Fort Worth skyline stretch out before us under the vast Texas sky. "Let's go home, Gerald. Or rather... let's go to the office. I have a new firm to build."
Gerald chuckled, tapping the partition window to signal the driver. "It's good to have you back, Megan. The corporate world missed its apex predator."

"I was never gone, Gerald," I said, looking out the window as the airport receded into the distance. "I was just taking a very long nap."
Behind us, miles away in Terminal C, Jack Walker was learning the hardest lesson of his life: never underestimate a woman who chose to stay quiet, because when she finally speaks, her words carry the weight of an avalanche.
