Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The notification ping on Jack’s phone was a custom tone—one he reserved strictly for hospital emergencies and corporate legal updates. Down below in the bustling Terminal C atrium, I watched the exact millisecond the illusion of his invincibility shattered.

His thumb hovered over the screen, trembling. The effortless charm he had weaponized for a decade melted away, exposing the panicked, hollow man beneath.

Carol noticed first. The matriarch stopped adjusting her oversized designer sunglasses, her sharp eyes narrowing as she stepped toward her son.

"Jack? What is it? We're going to miss TSA pre-check if you don't move," Carol snapped, her voice carrying a shrill edge of impatience.

The blonde woman—whose name I didn't yet know, though I knew her bank account details were currently landing in Gerald’s digital queue—placed a manicured hand on Jack’s arm. "Is it the hospital? Can't they page someone else?"

Jack didn't answer. He couldn't. His eyes were wide, darting frantically around the terminal as if looking for a trapdoor in the middle of a crowded airport.

From my vantage point above, I pulled up my own encrypted screen. Gerald hadn’t just sent a notification; he had unlocked the master vault.

Ten years ago, before I met Jack, before I wore a modest diamond and played the role of the quiet, supportive suburban doctor's wife, my name commanded boardrooms and forensic audits across three continents. As the primary forensic asset architect for Sterling & Vance, I didn't just manage wealth—I tracked hidden offshore syndicates, unmasked corporate embezzlement, and restructured multi-million dollar portfolios. When I married Jack, I locked that life away, believing he loved me for me.

Instead, he used my quiet compliance to quietly siphon every liquid asset, property deed, and medical patent into accounts registered under shell corporations—corporations legally bound to my pre-marital corporate identity.

Jack thought he had married a docile housewife. He had actually invited a financial executioner into his bed.

Down below, Jack finally managed to unlock his phone. The screen cast a ghastly blue light across his sweating face.

File 1 of 44: Corporate Malpractice & Asset Misappropriation.

He hit call, dialing my number with frantic, clumsy jabs of his finger.

My phone hummed quietly against my palm. I let it ring once. Twice. Three times.

On the floor below, I watched Jack slam his phone against his thigh in sheer frustration when it went straight to voicemail.

"Who is it?" Ashley shrieked, stamping her foot. "Jack, I swear to God, if your hospital calls you back on our family trip to Maui, I'm going to lose my mind. You promised us this week!"

"Shut up, Ashley!" Jack snarled, his voice cracking with a raw panic that turned heads three rows over.

May you like

Carol gasped, clutching her pearls. "Jack David Walker, do not speak to your sister that way! What on earth has gotten into you?"

"My career," Jack whispered, his voice trembling so violently I could read the movement of his lips through the glass. "My entire life... it's gone."
