Chapter 4 - A Call to Marcus Hale

Dominic tapped a single contact on his screen, placing the phone on speaker and laying it flat on Preston’s birthday table, right beside the half-eaten cake.

The phone rang three times before a gruff, irritated voice barked through the small speaker.

“Dominic? It’s past ten o’clock. If this isn't about the harbor logistics contract, you’re interrupting my evening.”

The entire restaurant strained to listen. Preston swallowed hard, his face turning ghostly white as he recognized his father’s voice.

“Good evening, Marcus,” Dominic said, his tone conversational, almost polite. “I apologize for disturbing you so late. But I have your son, Preston, sitting right here in front of me at the Monarch Room.”

A pause on the line. Then Marcus Hale’s voice sharpened with suspicion and paternal irritation.

“Preston? What did that idiot do now? Did he run up another bar tab? Just charge it to my corporate account and send him home.”

“He didn't run up a bar tab, Marcus,” Dominic replied softly. “He and his friends decided to spend their evening harassing the staff. More specifically, they held my wife down on the floor, took a pair of electric clippers, and shaved half her head.”

Silence crashed over the phone line. It was a dense, heavy silence that seemed to last for an eternity.

“Your... your wife?” Marcus stammered, the authoritative bluster instantly draining from his voice. “Dominic, listen to me, I didn't know—Preston is drunk, he’s young, he doesn't know what he’s doing—”

“I know he doesn't know what he’s doing,” Dominic interrupted, his voice dropping into a lethal register. “And starting tomorrow morning at eight o’clock, he’s going to get a very thorough education in consequences.”

“Dominic, please! Name your terms!” Marcus pleaded, the sound of panic crystal clear in the older man’s voice. “A million? Five million? Take whatever you want, just don't touch him—”

“Keep your money, Marcus,” Dominic said coldly. “You’re going to need every dime of it to pay your bankruptcy lawyers.”

Dominic reached out, pressed the end call button, and slid the phone back into his pocket.
