Chapter 3 - The Architecture of Betrayal

As Jack frantically dialed my number a second time, my mind drifted back to how meticulously this trap had been constructed—not by me, but by him.
When we met, Jack was a brilliant but struggling surgical resident drowning in medical school debt. I had just walked away from a high-stakes forensic accounting career, exhausted by greed and looking for a quiet life. I poured my personal savings into his residency, paid off his debts, and used my network to secure his fellowship at Dallas Presbyterian.
When he became Chief of Surgery three years ago, the lifestyle inflation began. The lake house in Austin. The new Lexus. The country club memberships. Every time he thanked me with a cold kiss and an excuse about "long hours at the hospital," I excused it. I thought he was just stressed.
I didn't realize he was funding a second life with a pharmaceutical rep named Chloe—the very blonde woman currently gripping his arm in a panic.
My phone buzzed again. Another call from Jack.
I swiped the screen, routing the call through a secure VoIP filter that disguised my location and projected a flat, synthetic echo.
"Megan!" Jack choked out the moment the line connected, his polished bedside manner completely evaporated. "Megan, where are you? Look, I can explain—the hospital called, an emergency came up, I had to—"
"You're standing in Terminal C, Jack," I said softly, my voice devoid of emotion.
Silence swallowed the line. The ambient roar of the airport seemed to mute itself.
"What?" he whispered, his eyes darting wildly toward the ceiling, searching the upper walkways.
"You're standing near Gate 24 with Carol, Ashley, the kids, and Chloe," I continued, reciting the details with chilling precision. "The flight to Maui boards in thirty minutes. Such a shame you're going to miss it."
"Megan, listen to me," he stammered, grabbing his head with his free hand. "This isn't what it looks like! Chloe is just a... a colleague! Her brother works for the airline, she got us companion passes—Mom and Ashley wanted a trip, I just came to see them off! I swear to God, I'm going straight to the hospital right now—"
"Jack," I interrupted, my tone dropping to a razor-sharp whisper. "Stop lying. Your mother taught you how to lie, but you never learned how to cover your digital footprint."
"What are you talking about?"
"Check your email. File number two just dropped."

Down below, I watched Chloe’s phone buzz. Then Ashley's. Then Carol's.
One by one, the entire family pulled out their devices. The color vanished from Carol’s face so fast she looked like a ghost in broad daylight.
