Chapter 7 - The Grand Correction

Fifteen minutes later, the string quartet in the grand ballroom finished a movement, and the conductor lowered his baton. The murmurs of the wealthy elite filled the room as they waited for the host to return.

Suddenly, the grand double doors at the head of the ballroom swung open.

A collective hush fell over the room.

Adrian Vale walked down the sweeping central staircase. But he wasn't alone.

Walking right beside him was Mara Quinn.

The gasps that swept through the crowd this time were entirely different from the ones earlier. Mara’s gray housekeeper uniform was still on, but the small bandage above her eyebrow and the resolute, unyielding fire in her eyes gave her the aura of a queen rather than a servant. Behind them, flanked by federal law enforcement and private security, walked Celeste and Julian Vale in silver handcuffs, their heads bowed in total defeat.

Adrian walked straight to the center dais, picked up the wireless microphone from the podium, and tapped it once. The amplified sound echoed crisply across the massive hall.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Adrian’s voice boomed, rich, steady, and utterly commanding. "I apologize for interrupting the evening's festivities. But before we continue celebrating, a correction is in order."

He turned his head slightly, looking directly at the prominent board members, socialites, and city officials who had sneered at Mara earlier in the evening.

"Earlier tonight, an accusation of theft was leveled against Miss Mara Quinn within these walls," Adrian continued, his eyes sweeping across the frozen crowd. "That accusation was a malicious, fabricated lie orchestrated by my former wife, Celeste, and my former partner, Julian Vale, as part of a desperate attempt to cover up their conspiracy to commit corporate treason and murder."

Whispers erupted like a tidal wave across the ballroom. Faces paled. Several high-profile investors dropped their champagne flutes, watching in absolute shock as Celeste and Julian were led out toward the front entrance by federal agents in full view of the press.

Adrian turned back toward Mara, the harshness completely melting from his features. He reached out, taking her small, trembling hand in his large one, raising it high so everyone in the room could see.

"Furthermore," Adrian continued, his voice ringing with absolute finality, "Miss Quinn is not, and has never been, an employee of this estate. Effective immediately, she is my equal partner in every enterprise bearing the Vale name—and, if she will grace me with the honor, the future mistress of this house."

Mara stood frozen under the blinding lights, her breath catching in her throat as she stared up at the man who had torn down an empire just to rebuild it right beside her.
