Chapter 6 - The Broken Alibi

The chaos in the East Wing stood in stark, surreal contrast to the muffled sounds of classical string music still drifting up from the ballroom downstairs. The guests were still drinking, laughing, and mingling, completely oblivious to the fact that a coup had just been violently dismantled upstairs.

In the center of the library, the air was thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and spilled whiskey.

Adrian didn't look at his brother. He didn't look at his weeping wife as she was dragged out the door in handcuffs. His entire focus snapped instantly toward the corner of the room, where Mara was slowly pushing herself up from the floor, wincing as she clutched her bruised arm.

He crossed the room in three long strides, dropping to one knee beside her.

"Mara," he murmured, his voice losing its icy exterior, replaced by a raw, ragged urgency that he rarely showed to anyone. He gently reached out, his large, calloused fingers hovering near her bleeding eyebrow before resting lightly on her cheek. "Let me see."

Mara flinched backward, pulling her face away from his touch. The sting of the public humiliation in the ballroom was still fresh, burning hotter than the physical wound on her forehead.

"Don't," she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of pain and lingering fury. "Don't touch me, Mr. Vale."

Adrian stopped. The rejection hit him harder than any physical blow could have. He slowly lowered his hand, his dark eyes filled with a heavy, aching regret.

"I had to do it, Mara," he said quietly, keeping his voice low so only she could hear. "If I had defended you in the ballroom—if I had exposed Celeste right then and there in front of the board members and our rivals—they would have gone underground. They would have destroyed the digital backups before we could lock down their offshore accounts. I needed them to feel safe. I needed them to think they had won, so they would walk right into this room."

"And using me as the sacrificial lamb?" Mara’s voice cracked, tears finally overflowing and washing through the blood on her forehead. "You let a hundred wealthy people look at me like I was garbage. You let them spit on my dignity, Adrian! You promised me... you swore to me you would never use me as bait."

May you like

Adrian closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, absorbing her words like a penance. When he opened them, the cold mafia boss was completely gone, leaving only a man standing bare before the person who had saved his life.

"I know," he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "I broke my word to keep you safe from a bullet, and in doing so, I broke your heart. There is no excuse for that. But I swear to you, Mara... what happened downstairs is going to be undone, publicly and permanently."
