Chapter 2 - Shadows in the East Wing

While the ballroom upstairs buzzed with champagne-fueled gossip about the wretched, thieving maid, the real war was quietly shifting its theater to the secluded East Wing of the Vale mansion.
The East Wing was a relic of the estate's older history—darker, less frequented, and lined with centuries-old oak bookshelves that muffled sound completely. Here, away from the glittering lights and oblivious socialites, Celeste Vale poured two glasses of crystal-clear vintage scotch. Her hands trembled slightly, not from fear, but from an intoxicating cocktail of adrenaline and triumph.
"We finally did it, Julian," Celeste breathed, handing a glass to her brother-in-law.
Julian Vale stood by the fireplace, nursing his drink with a slow, predatory smirk. Unlike his older brother Adrian, whose aura commanded instant, terrified respect through sheer stoicism, Julian possessed a restless, flashing energy—ambitious, impatient, and utterly devoid of a moral compass.
"I have to admit, Celeste, using the little maid as a scapegoat was a stroke of genius," Julian chuckled, taking a slow sip. "Adrian looked like he wanted to murder her himself. Though, honestly, I’m surprised he didn't put a bullet in her right there on the parquet floor. He's getting soft in his old age."
"Adrian isn't soft; he's arrogant," Celeste corrected sharply, her eyes flashing dangerously. "He thought he could keep a stray dog in the house and domesticate it. But a thief is a thief. By the time the police arrive with the warrant for that stolen bracelet—and find the 'forged' transfer documents we planted in her quarters—Adrian’s precious little confidante will be locked away for a decade. And Adrian? With his most loyal asset disgraced and discredited, his board will lose total confidence in his leadership before midnight strikes."
"And the poison?" Julian pressed, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial murmur. "Is it in his nightly decanter?"
Celeste smiled, a chilling expression that didn't reach her cold blue eyes. "Slow-acting, untraceable organ failure. By Monday morning, my grieving widow act will be ready for the cameras, and you will step into the CEO seat as interim head of the syndicate. We'll sign the restructuring papers over to the syndicate rivals by Tuesday, and we'll be sipping cocktails in the Cayman Islands by the end of the month."
"To the new era of the Vale family," Julian toasted, clinking his glass against hers.
Neither of them heard the soft click of the heavy oak library door unlatching behind them. Neither of them saw the tall, imposing figure step out from the deep shadows of the towering bookshelves.

"I'm afraid your flight to the Cayman Islands is going to be canceled, Julian," a deep, gravelly voice echoed through the silent room.
Celeste dropped her crystal glass. It shattered against the Persian rug, the amber liquid splattering like blood across the wool.
