Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

Time seemed to slow to a agonizing crawl.
As Julian whipped the firearm out, pointing it squarely at Adrian’s chest, Celeste screamed, covering her ears.
"Adrian, look out!"
The shout didn't come from Adrian. It didn't come from the empty hallway.
The hidden panel behind the bookshelf burst open with a loud crash. Mara sprinted out of the secret passage, moving with reckless, desperate speed. She didn't think about her own safety; she didn't think about the social humiliation she had suffered thirty minutes ago. She only saw the barrel of the gun aimed at the man who had risked everything to protect her from the shadows.
Before Julian could pull the trigger, Mara lunged forward, slamming her shoulder directly into his arm.
The gun fired with a deafening explosion. The bullet whined past Adrian’s ear, shattering a priceless stained-glass window behind him into a million glittering shards.
"Get off me, you filthy rat!" Julian screamed, backhanding Mara across the face with the butt of the weapon.
The impact sent Mara crashing hard against the oak bookshelves, books tumbling down around her in an avalanche of leather-bound pages. A sharp cry escaped her lips as a jagged cut opened above her eyebrow, crimson blood instantly dripping down into her eye.
Julian re-aimed the gun, his eyes wild and bloodshot, turning the barrel toward Mara. "I'll finish you both right now—"
Bang.
The sound of a single, precise gunshot echoed through the library.
Julian froze. The color drained from his face in an instant. He looked down at his own right hand, which had suddenly gone completely limp and numb. The Beretta slipped from his nerveless fingers, clattering loudly against the floorboards. Blood began to seep rapidly through the fabric of his sleeve, pooling around his wrist.
Adrian stood with his arm extended, holding a smoking Walther PPK. His expression was carved from stone. He hadn't aimed for Julian’s head or chest; with terrifying marksmanship, he had shattered his brother's shooting hand.

"You're done, Julian," Adrian said, his voice echoing like a death sentence in the quiet room.
Before Julian could even scream, the heavy double doors of the library flew wide open. Elias and half a dozen heavily armed security operatives flooded the room, subduing Julian and pinning him face-down to the floor in seconds. Two other guards moved instantly to secure a sobbing, hysterical Celeste.
