Chapter 4 - Unmasked

"Adrian," Celeste gasped, her fingers clawing frantically at the edge of the mahogany table to steady herself. Her sophisticated facade was completely fracturing, replaced by the panicked scrambling of a cornered animal. "What... what are you doing here? You should be in the ballroom thanking your investors."

Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. The sheer weight of his presence sucked all the air out of the room. He walked slowly toward them, his dark overcoat trailing behind him like the wings of a predatory bird.

"I was busy, Celeste," Adrian said softly, his eyes locked onto his wife's terrified face. "I was contemplating how unfortunate it is when a person spends years building an empire, only to discover that the termites gnawing at the foundation share her bed and his last name."

Julian forced a nervous, jagged laugh, stepping in front of Celeste. "Come on, big brother. Is this some kind of twisted sick joke? What kind of melodramatic nonsense are you spouting now? Too much scotch at the gala?"

Adrian stopped three feet away from his brother. The height difference alone was intimidating, but the absolute stillness in Adrian's posture made him terrifying.

"You think this is a joke, Julian?" Adrian asked, his voice dangerously low. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek, black metallic drive—the exact duplicate of the flash drive Mara had spent the last three weeks protecting at the risk of her life.

He tossed it onto the library table. It clattered against the wood, stopping right next to the puddle of spilled scotch.

"That drive contains every recorded conversation between you and my beloved wife over the past four months," Adrian continued, ticking the points off on his fingers. "Every encrypted phone call discussing how to slip pharmaceutical-grade cardiac suppressants into my nightly drink. Every architectural layout of the docks you planned to sell off to the Osaka syndicate behind my back. And, most entertainingly, your elaborate little blueprint for framing an innocent kitchen maid to take the fall for corporate embezzlement and theft."

Celeste’s knees buckled. She dropped heavily into a leather armchair, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "You... you knew. All this time, you knew?"

"I knew you were discontented, Celeste," Adrian replied coldly. "I didn't realize you were profoundly stupid enough to hire amateurs to carry it out. Did you really think my security team wouldn't flag Julian's offshore shell company transferring fifty thousand dollars to the head housekeeper's replacement account—an account you tried to open using forged documents under Mara's maiden name?"

Julian’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. The mask of charm was entirely gone, replaced by a snarling desperation. He reached frantically inside his tuxedo jacket, his fingers wrapping around the grip of a concealed Beretta pistol.

"If we're going down, you arrogant bastard, you're coming with us!" Julian roared, ripping the gun free.
