Chapter 9 - The Extraction

Before Evelyn could reply, the heavy front doors of the mansion swung open.

Donald Vance, our new family attorney, walked into the foyer, followed by two uniformed police officers and a pair of state investigators. Marcus stood behind them, holding a secure laptop.

Evelyn spun around, her face turning pale as she recognized the police uniform. "What is the meaning of this? This is private property! Arthur, tell them to leave!"

"Evelyn Vance," the lead investigator said, stepping forward and producing a signed warrant. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and embezzlement from the Katherine Vail Memorial Foundation. You have the right to remain silent."

"This is absurd!" Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking as an officer stepped forward to pull her arms behind her back. "Arthur! You are making the biggest mistake of your life! My mother will have you ruined by morning! Donald, do something!"

Donald Vance looked at her coldly. "I've already reviewed the digital transfers, Evelyn. Your mother’s estate was leveraged to pay off your private practice’s debts six months ago. The Vance family doesn't have the money to bail you out of this one. You're done."

As they cuffed her, Evelyn turned back to me, her eyes wild with a desperate, venomous rage. "You think you won? You're just a lonely widower who couldn't even see the snake in his own bed! Your daughters will always remember what I did to them!"

"They will remember that their father came home," I said quietly.

I turned my back as the officers dragged her out into the pouring rain, her screams fading down the long stone driveway.
