Chapter 6 - The Interception

The rain began to fall as Marcus and I approached the main house through the service entrance. The mansion was dark except for the light coming from the master suite upstairs and the faint glow of the kitchen lamps.
We stepped into the service corridor. I signaled Marcus to stay by the door while I moved toward the kitchen.
Mrs. Gable was there, wiping down the counters, her face etched with exhaustion. When she turned and saw me standing in the doorway—not in London, but right there in my traveling clothes—she let out a sharp gasp, dropping her towel.
"Mr. Arthur!" she whispered, her hands flying to her mouth. "You... you're home? How—"
"Shh," I placed a finger to my lips, stepping forward and taking her trembling hands in mine. "Martha, I know everything. I know about the money she took. I know what she’s been doing to Lily and Grace. I saw the cameras."
The old woman broke down, tears streaming down her lined face. "I'm so sorry, sir. I wanted to tell you, but she showed me the bank records. She said she’d put me away where I could never protect the girls again. I couldn't leave them alone with her."
May you like
"You didn't leave them," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "You protected them. You are the reason they are safe tonight. Go upstairs right now, wake the girls, and take them down the back stairs to Marcus’s car. Do not let Evelyn see you."
She nodded vigorously, wiping her eyes, and disappeared up the back stairwell.
