Chapter 8 - The Mask Slips

The silence that followed was absolute. The elegant, sophisticated pediatric surgeon vanished. Evelyn’s face hardened, her lips pulling back into a sneer that made her look like a completely different person. She set her wine glass down on the side table with a sharp click.
"So you played detective," she said, her voice dropping into that cold, flat register I had heard on the monitor. "You think you're clever, Arthur? You think a few grainy security clips and the word of a senile housekeeper will hold up against my family’s legal team?"
"It’s not just grainy clips," I said, pulling the manila folder from inside my coat and tossing it onto the coffee table between us. "That’s the forensic audit from the Cayman accounts. It has your digital signature, your routing numbers, and the IP addresses matching your private laptop in the study."
Evelyn glanced at the folder, but she didn't open it. She took a slow, deep breath, regaining her composure with terrifying speed.

"You won't ruin me, Arthur," she whispered, stepping closer to me, her eyes filled with a calculated malice. "If you take this to the press, if you file a police report, I will destroy your company’s reputation before the market opens tomorrow. I know every vulnerability in your logistics network. I know the offshore tax structures your firm uses. I’ll drag your name through the mud so thoroughly your daughters won't even be able to attend a public school in this city, let alone a private one."
"You really don't get it, do you?" I asked, looking at her with genuine pity. "You think everything is a transaction. You think everyone has a price."
