Chapter 4 - The Longest Day

For the next eight hours, I watched the cameras like a man possessed.

I watched my daughters scrub the baseboards of the grand ballroom, their small hands red from the cold water. I watched Mrs. Gable secretly slip them hot chocolate and warm towels when Evelyn went to her study to take telehealth calls. I saw the quiet, conspiratorial glances between the old housekeeper and my children—the way she would stand near the doorway, acting as a lookout so the girls could rest their aching backs.

Evelyn wasn't just cruel; she was calculated. She never left a physical mark. Her weapons were isolation, fear, and the threat of tearing the family apart.

At 4:00 PM, Evelyn’s phone rang on the kitchen counter. She answered it on speaker while pouring a glass of white wine. It was her mother, Lady Beatrice Vance.

"Has Arthur checked in from his layover?" the older woman’s voice crackled through the speaker.

"Not yet. He thinks I’m handling the charity gala details today," Evelyn said, taking a slow sip. "The fool actually believes I want to spend my weekends raising his dead wife's baggage. Once the marriage certificate is signed next month, I’m transferring the girls to the seasonal academy in Switzerland. They’ll be gone ten months out of the year, and Arthur will be too busy running his logistics empire to notice."

"And the housekeeper?"

"The paper trail for the embezzlement is complete," Evelyn replied smoothly. "The moment the wedding is over, I’ll trigger the internal audit. She’ll be arrested, Arthur will be devastated, and I will be the grieving, supportive wife who cleans up the mess. The Vail family fortune will be entirely under our management within two years."

I closed my eyes, the sheer scale of her malice washing over me. This wasn't just an abusive stepmother. This was a hostile corporate and personal takeover of my life.
