Chapter 5 - The Turning Point

By 9:00 PM, Marcus arrived at the guest house, slipping through the woods under the cover of darkness. He carried a heavy manila folder and a secure flash drive.
"We got it," Marcus said, laying the papers across the desk. "Evelyn didn't just steal twenty thousand to frame Martha. She’s been systematically siphoning funds from your private foundation—the one set up in your late wife’s name for pediatric cancer research. She’s moved over four hundred thousand dollars into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands."
I looked at the bank statements. The digital footprints were clear. Evelyn had used her administrative access as the co-chair of the foundation to alter the digital ledgers, making the outgoing wires look like authorized medical equipment purchases, but the destination accounts belonged entirely to her.
"What about the lawyer?" I asked.

"Donald Vance—no relation to her family," Marcus said with a grim smile. "He’s the top family law attorney in the state, and he hates corporate fraud. He’s already reviewing the footage from today. He says we have enough for a restraining order and a corporate grand jury indictment, but we need to secure the children first."
"Tonight," I said, standing up and buttoning my coat. "We do it tonight. Evelyn thinks I’m somewhere over the Atlantic. She’s relaxed. She’s having wine. We catch her in the act."
