Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of an Empire

The silence inside the secure vault office was absolute. The digital monitors flickered softly against the mahogany walls, casting a cool blue light over the assembled group.

Vivian realized she had nothing left to lose. The aristocratic mask of the Duca family heiress shattered completely, her face twisting into a mask of bitter hatred.

“You think you’re untouchable, Alessandro?” Vivian snarled, leaning forward against the glass table. “My father’s men are already positioned outside your gates. The moment we don't check in by midnight, this entire estate goes up in flames. You can kill us, but you’ll burn with us!”

Alessandro didn't even blink. He calmly reached down to his desk intercom and pressed a single button.

“Marco,” he said smoothly.

“Yes, Boss?” Marco’s voice echoed through the speaker.

“Status on the perimeter gates?”

“Duca’s enforcement crew rolled in three vans about ten minutes ago, expecting a clean takeover,” Marco replied, a cold chuckle evident in his voice. “Our perimeter teams locked the main access tunnels, deployed acoustic-frequency jammers so their comms are dead, and our tactical units have currently got all twelve of their men pinned against the outer stone wall with their hands behind their heads. It’s over before it started.”

Vivian’s jaw dropped. The last remnants of color drained entirely from her face, and she slumped back into her chair, defeated.

Luca buried his face in his hands, soft, ragged sobs escaping his throat. “I’m sorry... I just wanted out of your shadow, Alessandro. I thought...”

“You thought wrong,” Alessandro interrupted coldly. He didn't raise his voice, but the finality in his tone was absolute. “You traded loyalty for ambition, and in doing so, you betrayed the very code that kept you alive in the gutters of Brooklyn. Take them away.”

Two security guards stepped forward, hauling Luca and Vivian to their feet. As they were dragged out toward the subterranean holding cells, Vivian screamed curses down the hallway, her threats fading into the distance as the heavy steel doors slammed shut behind them.

When the room grew quiet again, only Alessandro, Rosa, and little Lily remained.

Rosa was still kneeling on the floor, weeping quietly into her hands, the weight of eighteen years of false grief and hidden terror finally lifting from her shoulders in a devastating rush.

Little Lily walked over to her mother, patting her shoulder with small, gentle hands. Then the little girl turned back to Alessandro, signing a simple question with her fingers:

Are we safe now?
