Chapter 5 - The File in the Vault

Alessandro stepped away from the desk, handing his scotch glass to a guard without breaking stride. He walked out into the corridor, motioning for Marco to brief him as they headed toward the reinforced security vault behind his private office.
“What did you find?” Alessandro asked, his voice low and cutting through the quiet hum of the mansion's servers.
“It’s about Rosa Delgado and her late husband, Miguel,” Marco reported grimly, tapping the screen of the tablet as they walked down the dimly lit hallway. “Remember eighteen months ago when Miguel supposedly fell off that unfinished construction site downtown?”
Alessandro’s step faltered slightly. “The report said it was an industrial accident. OSHA cleared the developer.”
“OSHA was paid off,” Marco corrected bluntly. “The developer wasn't some random shell company. It was a subsidiary tied directly to the Duca family’s real estate holdings in New Jersey. Miguel didn't fall, Boss. He found out they were using the downtown framing sites to launder cartel drug shipments through your shipping containers without your authorization.”
Alessandro stopped walking. The air in the hallway seemed to drop ten degrees. “Who authorized the concealment?”
“Luca,” Marco said quietly. “And he didn't act alone. According to the internal emails we pulled from Vivian’s private server, they needed Miguel silenced before he could go to you. They staged the fall, delivered a closed casket, and threatened Rosa with her daughter’s safety if she ever asked questions.”
The puzzle pieces fell into place with brutal, mathematical precision.
The poison in the wine wasn't just a hostile takeover of the Moretti syndicate; it was a way to tie up loose ends permanently before the Duca family absorbed everything Alessandro owned. And the only reason the conspiracy had unraveled tonight wasn't because of police intelligence, wiretaps, or high-level informants.
It was because a three-year-old deaf child had been wandering the service corridors, watching hands move in the dark when adults thought no one was paying attention.
“Where is Rosa right now?” Alessandro demanded, his gray-blue eyes flashing with an icy fury that had not surfaced in a decade.

“She’s still downstairs in the main service kitchen, finishing up the dessert cleanup, completely unaware that her husband’s killers are sitting twenty feet away,” Marco replied.
“Bring her and the child up to the private office immediately,” Alessandro ordered, turning toward the heavy steel door of the vault. “And bring Luca and Vivian in here too. We are going to have a family meeting.”
