Chapter 9 - The Final Breath of Winter

The winter of the third year was harsh, the kind of weather that froze the city into silence. But for Leo and Evelyn, the ice had started to thaw.

Julian Vane was sentenced to life in prison, along with the conspirators who had ordered the fire. The city had begun to heal, the foundations of the new development projects slowly rising from the dirt where the old estate had burned.

They attended the groundbreaking ceremony, standing together as the first shovels of earth were turned. They didn't feel like ghosts anymore. They felt like architects.

“This was his favorite spot,” Leo said, pointing to the northern ridge where his father had loved to sit. “He used to watch the birds here.”

“Then it’s a good place for a garden,” Evelyn said.

They spent the afternoon planning, their voices low and hopeful. They weren't fighting the world anymore; they were making a place for themselves within it.

As they walked back to the car, Evelyn stopped and looked at Leo.

“You’re going to be a good father,” she said.

Leo looked at her, his eyes widening. “You… you’re pregnant?”

“Almost four months,” she said, smiling.

Leo pulled her into his arms, the strength of his embrace a testament to everything they had survived. He looked at the land, the garden, the horizon.
