Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

The investigation into the Chicago planning committee lasted two years. It was a brutal, exhaustive process, filled with threats, bribes, and a level of corruption that reached the highest levels of government.
Leo and Evelyn became a force. They worked together, gathering evidence, leaking information, and using Leo’s connections to dismantle the networks that had destroyed his family.
They weren't fighting for vengeance anymore. They were fighting for justice.
Evelyn went back to school, finishing the degree she had abandoned years ago. Leo began to shift the Moretti holdings away from the shadow economy and into legitimate, sustainable projects, using his power to build instead of destroy.
They were under constant surveillance, their lives a tightly controlled exercise in caution, but they were no longer living in fear.
One night, sitting on the terrace of their new home—a house built on the foundation of the old estate, a place where life was allowed to grow again—they watched the stars over Lake Michigan.
“Are we ever going to be completely free?” Evelyn asked.
“I don't think anyone is completely free,” Leo said. “But we’re happy. That’s enough for now.”
Evelyn rested her head on his shoulder. “It is.”
She felt the weight of the last few years, the long, dark road she had traveled from that rain-drenched alley to this moment of quiet.
“Do you think your father would be proud?” she asked.
May you like
Leo looked up at the stars. “I think he’d be proud of you. I think he’d be amazed by what you survived.”
Evelyn felt a tear slip down her cheek. She was Evelyn Hart, and she was the daughter of a gardener who had lived to see things grow. And she knew that, even in the coldest winter, the spring would always come.
