Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Julian Vane was a man who lived for optics. He understood that in the high-stakes world of Chicago’s elite, perception was reality. He believed he was the smartest person in any room, and that arrogance had been his undoing. He thought he could handle Leo, but he hadn't accounted for the woman who had watched him walk away from a burning house with a cold, calculated smile on his face.

The room began to grow quiet. People were watching—not because they knew what was happening, but because the energy between the three of them had become radioactive.

“It wasn't just me,” Julian stammered, his bravado finally shattered. “The Board… the city planning committee… they wanted the land. Your father refused to sell. He wouldn't leave, Leo. He wouldn't let them have the rights to the north valley.”

“So you killed him,” Leo said, his voice carrying clearly now, cutting through the music.

“I… I was hired to ensure the transition,” Julian said, his voice trembling. “It was supposed to be a structural fire. A tragedy. No one was supposed to be in the study.”

The crowd began to pull back, forming a wide, silent circle. The music stopped. The only sound was the distant hum of the ventilation system.

“You’re a murderer, Julian,” Leo said, his voice echoing in the vast, vaulted hall.

“I’m a businessman!” Julian shouted, his control finally snapping. “I did what had to be done to ensure the prosperity of this firm!”

Evelyn stepped forward, her voice ringing out like a bell. “You killed a gardener. You burned a man who lived to see things grow. You burned a home that was full of life. You didn't do it for prosperity. You did it for greed.”

Cameras were flashing now. People were reaching for their phones, recording, streaming. Julian Vane, the golden boy of Chicago real estate, was laid bare in the center of the Art Institute.

He looked around, desperate, realizing the trap he was in. He lunged toward the exit, but the doors were already blocked by Marcus and Leo’s men.

“There’s nowhere to go, Julian,” Leo said. “The police are already on their way. I didn't come here to kill you. I came here to ensure you never walk free again.”

Julian collapsed, his face buried in his hands, as the sirens began to wail in the distance.
