Leo sat in the library of the safe house, a glass of whiskey in his hand, staring at the empty spaces where his father’s books should have been.
Evelyn walked in and sat down across from him.
“It’s done,” she said.
“Is it?” Leo asked. “The people who ordered it… the men in the planning committee… they’re going to walk, Evelyn. They have the lawyers, the money, the protection.”
“Not for long,” she said. “I’ve been looking through the rest of that ledger. There are names in there that haven't been released yet. Names of judges, city council members, police commissioners.”
Leo looked at her, his eyes brightening. “We can bring them down, too.”
“We can,” she said. “But it will be a long road. And it will be dangerous.”
“I’ve been living in danger for five years,” Evelyn said, a small, brave smile forming on her lips. “I’m not afraid of them anymore.”
Leo stood up and walked over to her. He reached out and touched her hand, the falcon-ring he wore catching the light.
