Chapter 6 - The waking dragon

For the next twelve hours, the eighth floor of the hospital was turned into a fortress.

Dante’s men replaced every single hospital security guard. No one was allowed on the floor without a personal clearance from Dante himself. Dr. Sarah Chen was the only medical professional permitted to enter, and she did so under the constant surveillance of two armed men.

Elena sat in the corner of the room, her scrubs clean now after she had changed into a spare set from the hospital laundry. She had not slept in thirty-six hours, but the adrenaline running through her veins made sleep impossible.

On the bed, Luca Vescari’s hand moved.

It was a small, subtle movement—a twitch of his fingers against the white sheet.

Elena was beside him in an instant. She checked his pupil response, her flashlight casting small, bright circles over his dark eyes.

His eyelids fluttered, then slowly opened.

For a second, his gaze was vacant, unfocused, glassy from the heavy sedatives. But as the seconds passed, his eyes cleared, turning a deep, piercing gray. He looked at the ceiling, then at the ventilator tube in his mouth, and finally, his gaze settled on Elena.

He didn't panic. He didn't try to thrash. He simply looked at her with a calm, commanding intelligence that made Elena’s breath hitch.

"Don't try to speak, Mr. Vescari," Elena said softly, her hand gently resting on his forearm. "You have a breathing tube in. You're in the hospital. You were shot, but you are safe now. I’m going to help you breathe."

She quickly dialed down the ventilator settings, preparing him for extubation. "I’m going to count to three, and then I’m going to pull the tube out. I need you to cough for me. Ready? One... two... three."

With a quick, practiced motion, she pulled the long plastic tube from his trachea.

Luca coughed violently, his chest heaving as he spat out the remaining secretions. Elena was there with a warm cup of water and a straw, holding it to his lips as he drank greedily.

"Water..." he rasped, his voice incredibly deep and dry, like gravel being dragged across stone.

"Slowly," Elena said. "Just small sips."

Luca sank back against the pillows, his gray eyes tracking every movement of her face. He looked at the shattered glass on the floor, which had not yet been fully cleared, and the dark stain on the wall where the orderly had fallen.

"What happened?" Luca whispered.

"Your cousin Matteo tried to finish what the Valentis started," Dante’s voice came from the doorway.

Dante walked into the room, his face filled with a rare, genuine emotion as he saw his brother awake. He knelt beside the bed, grabbing Luca’s hand. "They ambushed you, Luca. But you survived. And then they tried to poison you here. If it wasn't for her..."

Dante pointed to Elena. "If it wasn't for Nurse Marlowe, you’d be in a body bag right now. She diagnosed a tension pneumothorax when the doctors had already declared you dead. And she killed Silas when he tried to shoot you."

Luca looked at Elena.

For a long, quiet moment, he didn't say a word. His gaze was so intense, so deeply analytical, that Elena felt as though he was reading the very fabric of her soul.

"A rookie nurse," Luca whispered, a faint, ghost of a smile touching his dry lips. "And she did what my entire security detail couldn't."

"She’s the only one I trust in this building, Luca," Dante said. "The entire hospital is compromised. Vane is in Matteo’s pocket. We need to get you out of here."

Luca closed his eyes for a second, taking a deep, painful breath. When he opened them again, the weakness was gone. The boss had returned.

"Where is Matteo now?" Luca asked.

"He’s at the estate," Dante said. "He’s calling an emergency meeting of the Capos for tonight. He’s going to announce your death and claim the seat."

Luca’s hand tightened around Dante’s wrist with a strength that defied his medical condition. "Then we don't keep him waiting."
