Chapter 10 - The Beat of a New Heart

The surgery took two hours.
By the time Elena placed the final skin suture, the sun was rising over the East River, casting bright, warm light through the high windows of the safehouse.
Elena stood up, her back aching, her legs shaking so violently she had to hold onto the wall to keep from falling. She pulled her sterile gloves off, throwing them into the bin, and looked at the monitor.
Luca’s blood pressure was 118/75. His heart rate was a beautiful, stable 78 beats per minute. The internal bleeding had stopped.
"He’s going to make it," Elena said, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated exhaustion.
Dante let out a long, ragged breath, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor, his head in his hands. "Thank you, Elena. Thank you."
Suddenly, the front door of the safehouse was kicked open.
Dante’s men instantly raised their weapons, but they lowered them as they saw who entered.
It was Matteo Vescari.
Matteo was thirty-four, handsome in a cruel, sharp way, dressed in a luxury gray suit. He walked into the living room, followed by four of his personal guards, believing he was entering a house of death.
"Dante," Matteo said, his voice dripping with a fake, theatrical grief. "I heard about the ambush. I came as soon as I could. The Capos are waiting. We need to finalize the transfer of power."
Matteo stopped.
His eyes fell on the gurney in the center of the room.
Luca Vescari was sitting up.
He was leaning against the pillows, his face pale but his gray eyes burning with a cold, lethal fire that made Matteo’s knees shake.
"You're a bit late for the funeral, Matteo," Luca said, his voice quiet, but carrying the weight of a thunderclap.
Matteo took a step back, his face turning a sickly, greenish white. "Luca... you... they said you died in the trauma room."
"I did," Luca said, his gaze shifting to Elena, who was standing beside his bed. "But I have a very good nurse."
Dante stood up from the floor, his automatic rifle pointed directly at Matteo’s chest. "Silas is dead, Matteo. We have the phone logs from Vane’s clinic. We know about the payments from the Valentis. We know everything."
Matteo looked at his guards, but they had already lowered their weapons, realizing the dragon was not dead. They stepped away from him, leaving him standing alone in the center of the room.
"Luca, please..." Matteo stammered, falling to his knees. "It was the Valentis... they threatened my family... they forced me..."
"Take him downstairs," Luca said, turning his face away in disgust. "I will deal with him when I can stand."
Dante’s men grabbed Matteo by the arms, dragging him screaming into the basement, his cries fading behind the heavy steel doors.
The safehouse went quiet again.
Elena walked to the window, looking out at the rising sun. The city was peaceful, unaware of the war that had just been averted in this small, brick house.
She felt a presence behind her.
Luca had pulled himself up, standing with the help of a wooden cane Dante had found for him. He stood beside her, his broad shoulder brushing against hers.
"What happens now?" Elena asked softly.
"Now, we rebuild," Luca said, looking out at the city. "Vane will be brought to justice. The Valentis will pay for their mistake. And the Vescari family will have a new head of medical operations."
He looked at her, his gray eyes filled with a deep, quiet warmth.
"I want you to run the new private clinic, Elena. You will have the best equipment, the best staff, and the absolute protection of my family. No one will ever threaten you again."
Elena looked at him, a small, genuine smile touching her lips. "I’m a trauma nurse, Luca. I like the chaos."
May you like
"Then you’ll fit right in," Luca said, his hand gently sliding over hers, his fingers warm and strong.
Beside them, the portable heart monitor beeped in a steady, perfect rhythm—the beat of a new heart, and the beginning of a life they would build together.
