Blood reached the white line across the trauma-room floor before anyone admitted they had lost him.
“Time of death, 2:41 a.m.”
The monitor answered with one long, unbroken tone.
Beyond the reinforced glass, six men in dark suits watched the medical team step away from the body. One had blood on his collar. Another held his injured arm against his ribs. Their leader stared through the doors as if deciding who would pay first.
Elena Marlowe stayed beside the table.
She had been a registered nurse for seven months. Eleven nights in trauma. Young enough that Dr. Malcolm Vane still called her by the wrong name, inexperienced enough that no one looked at her when she whispered, “I saw him move.”
Vane stripped off his gloves. “Step away from the patient.”
Elena pressed two fingers beneath Luca Vescari’s jaw.
Nothing.
Then—
A flutter.
So faint it felt like a bird trapped behind a wall.
“He has a pulse.”
Vane checked for himself, his expression hardening. “There is nothing.”
But Elena saw the swelling near Luca’s collarbone. The barely moving chest. The blue spreading across his lips.
“Pressure may be blocking circulation.”
“We already treated the thoracic injury.”
“Then it wasn’t enough.”
The room went silent.
Vane stepped close enough that only she could hear him.
“You are a probationary nurse. You do not challenge a death declaration in front of my staff.”
Elena looked at the man everyone feared lying gray beneath the lights.
Then she reached for the emergency kit.
Vane caught her wrist.
“Touch him again,” he said, “and I’ll have security remove you.”
Behind them, the glass doors opened.
The broad-shouldered man from the corridor walked in without permission. His eyes dropped to Vane’s hand around Elena’s wrist.
“Let her go.”
Then he looked at Elena.
“Can you save him?”
She swallowed. “I can try.”
He stepped aside.
