Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Sanctuary

The weeks that followed felt like learning how to breathe after a lifetime underwater.
The scandal surrounding Saint Jude Memorial Hospital broke across national news networks within forty-eight hours of Dr. Harrison’s midnight confession. Federal investigators raided the administrative offices, unravelling a massive, multi-million-dollar illicit adoption ring that had operated unchecked for nearly a decade. Dozens of families were reunited, and the corrupt hospital board members were systematically indicted on federal racketeering and human trafficking charges.
For me, the transition from a broke waitress living in a cramped studio apartment to co-managing a sprawling lakefront estate with Chicago’s most powerful shipping magnate was dizzying.

With Roman’s full backing and financial investment, I launched a non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting low-income mothers navigating high-risk pregnancies, ensuring that no mother would ever be gaslit, manipulated, or robbed of her children by predatory hospital administrators again.
The nursery in the east wing was completely redesigned. We replaced the cold, sterile pastel walls with warm, vibrant colors, hand-painted murals of woodland animals, and bookshelves overflowing with children’s stories.
And the babies—Leo, Maya, and Julian—thrived.
