Chapter 7 - The New Dawn

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

Inside the Voss estate, the atmosphere had transformed entirely. The heavy, oppressive gloom that had haunted the hallways for over a year was gone, replaced by the chaotic, joyful sounds of three toddlers learning how to walk across the living room rug while chasing a golden retriever puppy Roman had apparently ordered at 4:00 AM.

I sat on the white linen sofa, holding a cup of steaming coffee in one hand while my daughter climbed into my lap, babbling happily and poking my nose with her tiny finger.

Roman walked into the living room holding two sippy cups, wearing a black cashmere sweater with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked like an entirely different man—relaxed, grounded, and genuinely smiling.

"Breakfast is served," Roman announced, setting the cups down on the coffee table before scooping up both boys in a single, effortless motion, making them shriek with laughter as he tossed them gently onto the cushions.

"You're spoiling them," I smiled, taking a sip of my coffee.

"I have fourteen months of missed breakfast duty to make up for," Roman replied, sitting down beside me on the sofa, his shoulder brushing against mine. He looked over at the children, then turned his gaze toward me, his expression softening. "And I have a lot of apologies to make to you, Pamela."

"You don't need to apologize, Roman. You helped me get them back."

"I let you suffer alone for a year while my children were sleeping under my roof," he said, his voice dropping low with quiet sincerity. "When I walked into Bella Rosa Trattoria last week, I was a broken man running an empire of glass. I didn't know what was missing until I heard your voice."

I reached out, placing my hand over his. "We were both looking for ghosts. Now we don't have to."

Before Roman could answer, my phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It was an email notification from my attorney and Roman's legal team.

Subject: Amended Birth Certificates & Legal Custody Decree - Executed.

I opened the file. There they were—three official state documents bearing my name as the legal, undisputed biological mother, alongside Roman as the father, completely purged of Dr. Harrison's fraudulent modifications.

"It's official," I whispered, showing him the screen.

Roman smiled, leaning in close and pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my temple.

"Welcome home, Pamela," he murmured.
