Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Dark

The basement beneath the Voss estate was not a dungeon of cinematic clichés; it was a high-tech, soundproofed security suite lined with server racks, tactical monitors, and reinforced concrete walls.
At 3:00 AM, Dr. Arthur Harrison sat handcuffed to a steel chair in the center of the room.
The once-prestigious chief of obstetrics at Saint Jude Memorial Hospital looked like a broken old man. His designer suit was rumpled, his hair was disheveled, and his skin had the pale, clammy sheen of someone who had just realized he had stepped off a cliff.
Standing in front of him were Roman Voss, Donovan, and me.
"Dr. Harrison," Roman said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped into the light. "Do you recognize the woman standing beside me?"
Harrison squinted through his wire-rimmed glasses, his eyes darting toward my face. Recognition flickered in his pupils, followed instantly by a wave of pathetic terror.
"Pamela... Pamela Hayes," Harrison stammered, licking his dry lips. "Mr. Voss, listen to me, this is a misunderstanding—"
"A misunderstanding," Roman repeated, stepping forward and slamming his hand down on the steel table. The loud bang echoed off the concrete walls like a gunshot. "You told her her children died. You told me their mother died. You forged death certificates, manipulated hospital logs, and sold three newborns to a grieving father for five million dollars."
"It was a business arrangement!" Harrison shrieked, breaking instantly under the pressure. "The surrogacy contract fell through! The biological mother was an impoverished waitress with no medical insurance and zero financial backing to raise triplets! I merely optimized an outcome! The infants went to a billionaire father who could provide them with everything they needed, and the mother was spared the insurmountable debt of a catastrophic neonatal ICU bill!"
"You spared me?" I shouted, stepping forward, the rage of fourteen months of stolen motherhood finally erupting out of my chest. "You stole my flesh and blood! You broke my heart into a million pieces and handed me three fake death certificates while you counted bribe money in the Caymans!"
I lunged toward the table, but Roman’s arm caught me smoothly around the waist, pulling me back against his chest with gentle, unbreakable strength.
"Quiet, Pamela," Roman murmured in my ear, his voice laced with ice. Then he turned his attention back to Harrison.
"The financial records are already synced to federal servers," Roman told the doctor, his tone dropping into a deadly whisper. "Every shell corporation, every offshore transfer, every forged birth record. By 8:00 AM, the FBI, the State Medical Board, and every major news outlet in the country will have the complete archive of Saint Jude’s corruption."
Harrison’s eyes went wide with absolute horror. "No! You can't do that! My license! My freedom! I'll go to prison for the rest of my life!"
"You should have thought about that fourteen months ago when you lied to a mother in Ward 4B," Roman said coldly. He nodded to Donovan. "Take him down to the federal drop-off point outside the city limits. Leave him tied to a lamppost with a flash drive taped to his chest containing all his banking confessions. Let the authorities handle the rest."
As Donovan dragged the screaming doctor out of the room, the heavy steel door slammed shut, plunging the basement into a thick, profound silence.
Roman turned to me, his hand still resting gently on my shoulder.
"It's over," he said quietly. "The legal custody papers are already being drawn up by my legal team. Your name will be restored on all three birth certificates before the sun comes up. No court in this country can ever take them away from you again."
I looked up at him, tears streaming down my face—not of grief, but of a strange, overwhelming peace.

"Thank you, Roman," I whispered.
He looked down at me, hesitation flickering across his face before he slowly pulled me into his arms. For the first time in fourteen months, I felt completely safe.
