Chapter 5 - Justice Served Cold

The red strobe lights painted the blood-red walls of the study in rhythmic flashes. Marcus froze, his hand hovering inches from his gun as the veteran capos poured into the room, their weapons trained dead-center on him and his guards.

Alessandro slowly lowered his hands from his desk. He looked at Marcus, his face completely devoid of mercy.

"You forgot one fundamental rule of the Chicago underworld, Marcus," Alessandro said, his voice cutting through the blaring alarm with absolute, terrifying calm. "A lion sitting down is still a lion. You just mistook my rest for weakness."

Marcus swallowed hard, panic breaking through his cold composure. "Alessandro—wait. We can talk about this. It's just business—"

"It's treason," Alessandro interrupted. He nodded toward the capos. "Take him and his men down to the lower warehouse. Lock them in the vault. Let the federal prosecutors figure out what's left of them after I audit every single penny they stole."

The enforcers dropped their weapons instantly as the capos swarmed forward, shoving Marcus and his men out of the study. The heavy doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off Marcus's frantic, desperate pleas.

The mansion slowly returned to a tense, echoing quiet. The red emergency strobes faded, replaced by the soft, warm glow of the desk lamps.

Alessandro sat in his wheelchair, breathing out a long, shuddering sigh of release. The weight of the past eight months seemed to lift off his shoulders all at once. He looked up and saw Clara standing near the doorway, still trembling slightly, shielding Emma in her arms.

"You saved us all tonight, Clara," Alessandro said sincerely. "I don't know how I can ever repay you."

Clara managed a weak, exhausted smile. "Just... keep your doors locked, Mr. Moretti."

At that moment, little Emma shifted in her mother's arms. She wriggled free, hopped down onto the hardwood floor, and trotted across the room straight to Alessandro's wheelchair.

She reached into her little cloth pouch once more. This time, she pulled out a brand-new, completely unbroken sugar cookie she had saved from her snack pack.

She held it up to him, her big eyes blinking earnestly.

"You win," Emma announced solemnly. "You can have the whole cookie now."

A genuine, warm laugh—the first Alessandro Moretti had uttered in years—finally echoed through the grand estate. He leaned forward, took the cookie from her tiny hand, and gently patted the little girl's head.

"Thank you, little general," Alessandro smiled softly. "I think I'm finally ready to take care of myself."
