Chapter 4 - The Unexpected Ally

Earlier that evening, Clara Vance had been packing up her things in the ground-floor pantry when she noticed the security monitor panel—usually locked down tight—was flickering with an open diagnostic screen.
Curious, she tapped the interface. To her horror, live camera feeds from the upper hallways showed Marcus and his armed guards entering Alessandro’s study. Then, the audio feed crackled to life, broadcasting Marcus’s chilling threats across the internal network.
Panic gripped her. She couldn't fight armed mobsters. But as she turned to run for the exit, a small tug caught at her jacket hem.
It was Emma. The toddler had woken up from her nap on the breakroom cot.
"Mama, where are we going?" Emma whispered, rubbing her eyes.
"Shh, sweetheart, we need to hide—" Clara started, but stopped. She looked down at Emma, then down at the master security console. There was a built-in emergency override switch—a relic from the estate's high-security upgrades that locked down every reinforced steel bulkhead in the building and routed a direct distress signal to the old-guard capos stationed outside the perimeter.
But the physical switch was located inside the main electrical vault across the courtyard.
Clara didn't hesitate. Scooping Emma into her arms, she slipped out through the service exit into the pouring rain, racing toward the detached garage where the security vault key was kept.
Inside the study, Marcus was losing patience. "Sign the damn paper, Alessandro! I'm done playing games."
He reached out, grabbing Alessandro by the collar of his shirt. "You're nothing without your legs! You're a cripple sitting on a throne of dust!"
Suddenly, the overhead lights in the mansion flickered violently and died.
A loud, metallic clank echoed through the walls as heavy steel security shutters slammed down over every window and door in the estate, sealing the study completely. An automated alarm blared red emergency strobes across the ceiling.
Marcus cursed, releasing Alessandro's collar. "What the hell is this?"
Before the enforcers could react, the heavy oak doors of the study were violently kicked open from the outside.
Standing in the doorway, soaked to the bone and breathing heavily, was Clara Vance. But she wasn't alone. Flanking her were four massive, heavily armed veteran capos—loyalists who had been banished to the outer districts months ago, summoned back by the master security override.

And sitting calmly in Clara’s arms, holding her little cloth pouch like a shield, was Emma.
Marcus spun around, reaching for his shoulder holster, but before his fingers could wrap around his weapon, a dozen laser sights locked onto his chest.
