Chapter 3 - The Trap Closes

The storm broke on a cold Thursday evening. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Moretti estate, drowning out the muffled sounds of thunder.

Alessandro sat in his study, the room illuminated only by the green glow of a desk lamp. Spread before him were the real financial records—smuggled in hours earlier by an old-guard loyalist who had managed to bypass Marcus’s security blockade. The numbers confirmed his worst fears. Over the past eight months, millions of dollars in syndicate holdings had been quietly funneled into offshore accounts under Marcus’s personal control.

The door clicked open.

Marcus stepped into the study, flanked by two armed enforcers from the private security detail. The friendly, deferential facade was gone, replaced by a cold, predatory sneer.

"Working late, Boss?" Marcus asked, walking casually toward the desk. "I told you, you don't need to worry about the books anymore."

Alessandro slowly closed the ledger. He looked up at the man he had trusted like a brother. "You built yourself a nice little empire while I was paralyzed, Marcus. Embezzling funds, cutting off my communications, paying off my doctors to keep me chemically subdued."

Marcus laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. He pulled up a chair and sat down directly across from Alessandro. "Paralyzed men don't run syndicates, Alessandro. The board needs strength, not a broken man sitting in a chair waiting to die. I merely expedited a transition that was already happening."

"And the accident?" Alessandro’s voice was dangerously quiet. "Was that your transition too?"

Marcus smirked, neither confirming nor denying it. "Let’s just say brakes fail at the worst possible times on rainy highways. But you survived. Which was a slight inconvenience. We had to adjust our strategy—keep you locked upstairs, pump you full of sedatives, and let everyone forget you ever existed."

One of the enforcers stepped forward, sliding a heavy legal document and a golden pen onto the desk right in front of Alessandro.

"Sign the asset transfer, Boss," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes flashing with menace. "Sign over full operational control of DeLuca Atlantic and the port terminals. Do that, and I’ll let you live out your days in comfort here. Refuse, and well... accidents happen twice."

Alessandro stared at the paper. His fingers curled tightly around the armrests of his wheelchair. He was physically weak, his legs still unresponsive, but the fire in his eyes burned brighter than it had in years.

"You think you've won," Alessandro whispered. "You think because I can't stand, I can't crush you."

"You're in a chair, Alessandro!" Marcus snapped, slamming his hand on the desk. "You're finished!"

Before Marcus could reach for the pen, a sudden, sharp crash echoed from the hallway outside the study.
