Chapter 2 - The Return of the Lion

That single crumb of sugar cookie broke a siege that had lasted eight months.
Over the next two weeks, the transformation inside the Moretti estate stunned everyone. It started small. The kitchen staff reported that Mr. Moretti had finished an entire bowl of soup—the first real meal he’d eaten since the hospital. Then, the heavy velvet drapes that had plunged his office into permanent gloom were pulled back, letting in the harsh Chicago sunlight.
By the third week, Alessandro demanded his wheelchair be wheeled down to the ground-floor conservatory.
His chief lieutenant, Marcus Vance—no relation to Clara, despite the shared last name—stared in absolute disbelief as Alessandro sat upright, reviewing a stack of import logs. Marcus had practically run the day-to-day operations of the Moretti syndicate since the accident, consolidating power and keeping the empire afloat while his boss wasted away upstairs.
"It’s good to see you back at the desk, Boss," Marcus said smoothly, though a subtle twitch in his left eye betrayed his unease. "Though, honestly, you should be resting. The board and I have been handling everything. You don't need to stress yourself over the logistics."
Alessandro looked up, his sharp grey eyes narrowing slightly. "Really, Marcus? Because when I asked for my physical therapy logs from Dr. Hayes, I was told she resigned."
"She did," Marcus replied smoothly, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Burnout. Happens to the best of them. I brought in a new specialist, Dr. Sterling. Much more... accommodating to your current condition."
"And when I asked to see my personal financial ledger from the Swiss accounts?" Alessandro pressed, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the terrifying authority that had built his empire.
Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second too long. "Those accounts are being audited, Boss. For your own safety. We had to lock down the routing numbers to prevent federal leaks."
Alessandro didn't answer. He simply nodded, dismissing Marcus with a flick of his hand. But as the doors closed behind his loyal lieutenant, a cold suspicion settled deep in Alessandro's chest.
Later that afternoon, little Emma and her mother returned to the estate. Clara had been officially hired as a part-time wellness coordinator to look after the household's dietary needs—a position Marcus had aggressively opposed, but Alessandro had forcefully insisted upon.
While Clara was busy in the kitchen, Emma wandered into the conservatory where Alessandro sat looking out over the manicured gardens.
The little girl trotted over, holding up a crooked crayon drawing of a cat. "Look."
Alessandro took the paper, a rare, faint smile touching the corners of his mouth. He set it carefully on his lap. "It's very good, Emma. Thank you."
Emma climbed up onto the footrest of his wheelchair, patting his knee. "You look less mad today."
"Do I?" Alessandro asked softly.
"Mhm. But the man with the shiny shoes is still mad." Emma pointed vaguely toward the hallway leading to the back administrative wing. "He was yelling at the phone. He said the old man upstairs is asking too many questions."
Alessandro froze. His gaze locked onto the child. "Who was yelling, Emma?"
"The tall uncle. The one who brings you papers."
Marcus.
A chilling realization washed over Alessandro. For months, he had believed his isolation was self-inflicted—that his depression had locked him away from the world. But as he pieced together the missing medical records, the blocked phone calls, the vanished visitors, and the sudden resignation of his trusted doctor, the truth became horrifyingly clear.

He hadn't isolated himself. He had been placed in quarantine. Someone inside his own inner circle was systematically cutting him off from the world, liquidating his assets, and preparing to stage a permanent coup.
And the only person who had noticed the cage door closing was a three-year-old child.
