Chapter 5 - Dawn Over Villa Moretti

The chaos of the night faded as the first pale rays of dawn began to paint the Milan sky in shades of gold and rose.

The guests had long since departed, the police reports had been quietly filed away by judges who answered only to the Moretti name, and Villa Moretti finally felt like a home instead of a fortress.

I stood on the grand balcony overlooking the rolling vineyards, holding a cup of steaming black coffee. My heart felt lighter than it had in two years. The ghost of my husband had finally been laid to rest with honor, his name cleared before the entire underworld.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me.

I turned to see Alessandro walking out onto the balcony. He had removed his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking less like a feared mafia don and more like a man finally unburdened by a crushing weight.

“She’s sleeping,” Alessandro said softly, leaning against the stone balustrade beside me. “Exhausted from the excitement. Rosa put her in the south guest suite—the one with the balcony facing the gardens.”

“Thank you, Alessandro,” I murmured, looking up at him. “For everything. For believing us.”

“I owe you and your daughter a debt that can never be repaid, Clara,” he said, his dark eyes softening as he looked down at me. “Julian was my brother in everything but blood. That means you and Emma are my family now. No one will ever touch you again. You’ll never have to scrub another floor or worry about survival as long as I breathe.”

“We can take care of ourselves,” I smiled faintly. “We’ve had a lot of practice.”

“I know,” he replied, a warm, genuine smile touching his lips for the first time. “Which is why you’ll make formidable partners in running this estate.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the blue wool rabbit, setting it gently on the table between us. One of its ears was slightly frayed, but the black emblem stitched into the fabric no longer represented treason or pain. It represented survival, truth, and a family finally brought back together.

As the sun broke fully over the horizon, casting a brilliant golden light across the Italian hills, I knew our dark days were finally behind us. The storm had passed, the king had his honor back, and for the first time in a very long time, the future looked bright.
