Chapter 2 - The Stitched Secret

The silence that blanketed Villa Moretti was absolute, thick enough to suffocate.

Alessandro remained kneeling on the marble floor, his long fingers gently holding the blue wool rabbit as if it were made of fragile glass. His thumb traced the small black emblem stitched into the fabric—a coiled viper entwined around a dagger. It was a crest belonging exclusively to the inner circle of the Moretti Vanguard, a elite tactical unit that had been betrayed and massacred during a bloody territorial war five years ago.

Only three men had ever worn that insignia. Two were dead in graves. The third had vanished the night the safehouse burned.

“Where did she get this?” Alessandro repeated, his voice dropping into a register so low and dangerous that Vivian instinctively took two steps backward.

I pulled Emma gently behind my skirts, my heart hammering against my ribs. “I... I made it for her,” I stammered, my voice shaking despite my best efforts. “When she was born. I used fabric from an old coat my husband left behind before he... before he passed away.”

Alessandro slowly stood up to his full, imposing height. He turned his dark, piercing gaze upon me, stripping away every defense I had.

“Your husband,” Alessandro said, his tone flat, carrying an unspoken avalanche. “What was his name?”

“Julian,” I whispered. “Julian Bennett.”

The name hit the room like a physical blow. Several older capos sitting near the back of the banquet hall gasped softly, exchanging nervous glances. Don Ricci leaned forward, gripping his cane so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Julian Bennett had been Alessandro’s most trusted shadow, his head of tactical security, and his closest friend—the man who had supposedly sold out the Moretti family to a rival syndicate five years ago before vanishing into the night with millions in bearer bonds. The official family history branded Julian as the ultimate traitor.

“Lies,” Alessandro breathed, taking a slow step toward me. “Julian Bennett was a dead man. The tribunal convicted him in absentia. His safehouse went up in flames. His body was never found, but the treason was absolute.”

“He wasn't a traitor!” I cried out, anger momentarily overriding my fear as I stepped between Alessandro and my daughter. “Julian died trying to protect the empire you built! He discovered a leak inside your inner circle—someone close to you who was selling your shipping routes to the Russians! He was framed, hunted, and forced to run to keep us alive!”

Vivian let out a sharp, derisive snort. “Oh, please! Are we really going to listen to a maid spinning fairy tales to cover up for a dead thief? Alessandro, she’s manipulating you! Throw them both out!”

Alessandro didn't even look at Vivian. His eyes remained locked on mine, searching my face for any sign of deception. He saw only the raw, scarred truth of a woman who had spent two years hiding in the shadows, raising a child in poverty while carrying the weight of a murdered husband's honor.

“If Julian was innocent,” Alessandro said slowly, his voice laced with suppressed fury, “then the man who framed him is still sitting at my tables.”

He turned sharply toward the banquet hall, his dark eyes sweeping over the twelve powerful mafia bosses. Every single man suddenly looked uneasy, shifting in their seats under the weight of his gaze.

“Lorenzo!” Alessandro barked.

His head enforcer stepped forward from the shadows instantly. “Boss?”

“Lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Not a single car, not a single guest, not a single guard. Seal the gates.” Alessandro’s voice echoed off the crystal chandeliers. “And bring me the financial ledgers from the northern port operations for the last six years. We are going to find out who wore that crest... and who killed my friend.”
