Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Vaults

The lower levels of Villa Moretti were carved directly into the ancient stone foundations beneath the estate, housing the family’s deepest secrets, wine vaults, and high-security archives.
Alessandro led us down the winding stone staircase himself, refusing to let us out of his sight. Emma clutched her blue rabbit tightly, her initial fear of the intimidating mafia boss replaced by a quiet, childish curiosity. She even reached out and patted his heavy black sleeve at one point, whispering, “You’re not so scary when you stop yelling.”
A rare, ghost-like smile touched the corner of Alessandro’s mouth, though his eyes remained stormy and focused.
In the center of the secure archive room, Lorenzo laid out thick leather-bound ledgers and digital drives extracted from the estate's main servers.
“Boss,” Lorenzo reported, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. “We cross-referenced the stitch pattern on the rabbit’s emblem with the uniform logs from five years ago. That specific thread count—carbon-infused nylon—was only issued to the tactical oversight detail. Only three people had authorization to order it: Julian, myself... and Marco Vance.”
Marco Vance.
My breath caught. Marco Vance was currently sitting upstairs in the banquet hall, acting as Alessandro’s chief financial advisor and primary consigliere—a sleek, smiling man in an expensive gray suit who had spent the last two years casually dropping hints to me about how difficult it was for a single mother to make ends meet in Milan.
“Vance,” Alessandro murmured, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. “The man who handled the offshore accounts during the northern port restructuring.”
“He’s the one who presented the 'conclusive evidence' that Julian was funneling money to the Russian syndicate,” Lorenzo added grimly. “He’s the one who pushed for Julian’s immediate execution without a trial.”
Alessandro turned his dark gaze toward me. “When Julian disappeared, did he leave anything else behind? Any documents? Any messages?”
I nodded slowly, walking over to the small duffel bag resting near the iron table. I unzipped the side pocket and pulled out a heavy, water-damaged steel lockbox. It was the only possession Julian had managed to smuggle to me before he was ambushed and killed in an alleyway in Marseille two years ago.
“He gave me this before he died,” I said, handing the box to Alessandro. “He told me that if anything ever happened to him, I should keep it safe until the day the truth caught up with the wolves.”
Alessandro took the lockbox. He didn't need a key; he simply pulled a small multi-tool from his pocket, expertly bypassed the mechanical tumblers with practiced ease, and flipped the heavy lid open.
Inside rested a collection of handwritten journals, audio micro-cassettes, and printed bank transfers bearing Marco Vance’s verified digital signature.
At the very top of the pile lay a photograph of a younger Julian Bennett standing beside Marco Vance, shaking hands in front of a warehouse in Genoa—the exact warehouse that had burned down the night Julian was branded a traitor. On the back of the photo, written in Julian’s handwriting, were four words: Vance is the leak.
The silence in the vault grew heavy, charged with the crackling electricity of impending vengeance.
“He framed my best friend,” Alessandro whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, terrifying rage. “He murdered my men, tore my empire apart from the inside, and let me live with the guilt for five years.”

He closed the box slowly and looked up at me. The cold, untouchable mafia king was gone, replaced by a man demanding justice.
“Clara,” Alessandro said softly, stepping closer. “Your husband saved my life more times than I can count. And I failed him. But tonight... that debt will be paid in full.”
