Chapter 4 - The Confession Under the Chandeliers

Upstairs, the grand banquet hall remained in a state of suspended animation.
The twelve mafia families sat in uneasy silence, whispering among themselves while armed guards blocked every exit. At the head table, Marco Vance sat nervously adjusting his cuffs, his eyes darting toward the heavy oak doors every few seconds. Vivian Romano stood nearby, looking furious and humiliated, whispering complaints into the ear of a silent capo.
When the heavy doors swung open, every head turned.
Alessandro walked into the hall with an aura of absolute death surrounding him. I walked a few steps behind him, holding Emma’s small hand tightly in mine. Flanking us were Lorenzo and six elite enforcers carrying automatic weapons at the ready.
“Alessandro, what is the meaning of this theater?” Marco Vance demanded, forcing a confident, corporate smile to his face as he stood up from the table. “Holding us hostage over a maid’s domestic dispute and some sentimental child’s toy? This is an outrage. The other families won't stand for—"
“Shut your mouth, Marco,” Alessandro interrupted quietly.
The three words carried such absolute authority that Marco’s smile vanished instantly. He swallowed hard, his eyes flickering with panic.
Alessandro walked straight up to the head table, slamming the heavy steel lockbox down onto the polished mahogany wood. The lid sprang open, spilling the financial ledgers, the micro-cassettes, and the damning photograph across the white tablecloth.
“Recognize this, Marco?” Alessandro asked, his voice dangerously soft. “It’s your signature on the transfer orders from the Genoa warehouse. It’s your face standing next to Julian Bennett on the night you blew his safehouse sky-high.”
Marco went chalk-white. His knees buckled slightly, and he grabbed the edge of the table to steady himself. “That’s... that’s a forgery! Planted evidence! You can’t trust the word of a dead traitor’s widow—”
“It’s not just paper, Marco,” Lorenzo stepped forward, clicking play on a small portable audio player resting on the table.
The room filled with the scratchy, undeniable sound of Marco Vance’s voice recorded five years ago:
“...just make sure the framing sticks, Russian contacts. If Moretti finds out I’m the one skimming the port shipments, we’re all dead men. Pin it on Bennett. He’s too loyal to defend himself properly...”
The audio played clearly across the cavernous hall. Twelve crime bosses sat in frozen horror, listening to the voice of the man who had orchestrated treason within their sacred circle.
Vivian gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at Marco in absolute disbelief. “Marco... you did that?”
Marco realized the game was entirely over. All color drained from his face. In a desperate, blind panic, he reached inside his suit jacket, pulling out a concealed silver pistol, aiming it straight at Alessandro’s chest.
“If I’m going down, I’m taking the king with me!” Marco shrieked.
Before his finger could even begin to pull the trigger, a thunderous crack echoed through the hall.
Lorenzo’s weapon fired with terrifying precision. A bullet tore through Marco’s wrist, sending his pistol clattering across the marble floor with a metallic clatter. A second later, two enforcers slammed Marco face-down onto the table, pinning him securely beneath the weight of absolute justice.
Marco groaned in agony, blood pooling on the white tablecloth.
Alessandro didn’t even flinch. He slowly walked around the table, looking down at the writhing man who had poisoned his empire.
“You betrayed my brother. You orphaned this little girl. You made me live a lie for half a decade,” Alessandro whispered, leaning down close to Marco’s ear. “You don't deserve a bullet. You deserve to disappear the way Julian did.”

He signaled to the enforcers. “Take him to the deep hold. Strip his accounts, strip his name, and let the rats finish what’s left of him.”
As Marco was dragged screaming from the hall, the twelve crime bosses slowly stood up in unison, bowing their heads toward Alessandro in a silent display of absolute submission and respect. The traitor was unmasked. The king had reclaimed his throne.
