Chapter 2 - The Shift in Power

The courtroom hummed with a sudden, tense energy as Dr. Ethan Hale adjusted the microphone on the witness stand. Margaret Whitmore’s fake tears dried instantly, her posture stiffening under her cream-colored Chanel suit.
"Dr. Hale," the judge said, leaning forward. "Please clarify your statement. The defense has submitted records showing that Mrs. Whitmore was a primary donor for the burn recovery wing."
"She was a donor on paper, Your Honor," Dr. Hale replied, his voice calm, steady, and carrying the absolute authority of a man who dealt in empirical facts. "But three years ago, when the Whitmore Burn Recovery Wing was constructed, Margaret Whitmore insisted on a very specific structural modification. She demanded that the wing’s private research laboratory be excluded from standard hospital oversight and connected to an independent ventilation and disposal line."
Ryan Whitmore shifted uncomfortably in his seat next to his mother, his eyes darting toward the exits.
Dr. Hale pulled a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase. "When Claire was admitted three weeks ago with severe, deep third-degree chemical burns, the laboratory analysis of the oil recovered from her clothing revealed something highly unusual. It wasn't standard cooking oil. It was laced with a synthetic compound called Dermacur-B—an experimental drug currently undergoing unauthorized, off-the-books testing inside that very wing."

Claire looked down at her bandaged left hand, her heart hammering against her ribs. The pain of the burning oil suddenly connected to a much deeper, darker betrayal.
"Margaret Whitmore didn't build that wing for charity, Your Honor," Dr. Hale concluded, looking directly at the older woman. "She built it to manufacture an unapproved, highly profitable drug, and she attacked her daughter-in-law because Claire was about to discover the financial discrepancies in the medical group's inventory logs."
