Chapter 9 - The Recovery

The aftermath didn't lead to a trial. Lorenzo’s old world was terrified of him, and the local authorities were baffled by the “mysterious” incident.
Isabella nursed him back to health in the small cottage. It was a strange, intimate period of healing. She dressed his wounds, she fed him, and she watched the man he was slowly becoming.
He was gentle now. Not just with her, but with himself.
One evening, as he sat on the porch, his arm in a sling, Isabella came out to sit beside him. She placed her hand on her stomach. The baby kicked, a sharp, strong movement.
She took Lorenzo’s hand and placed it there.
His face contorted, a mix of disbelief and overwhelming joy. “He’s... he’s moving.”
“She,” Isabella corrected, a small, genuine smile breaking through her defenses. “I think it’s a she.”
“A daughter,” he whispered.
For the first time in his life, Lorenzo didn't think about his accounts, his territories, or his rivals. He thought about a little girl, a life he had been given a second chance to cherish.

“I can’t promise you a normal life,” he said. “There will always be people who remember the name. But I will keep you safe. I will be the wall between you and everything else.”
Isabella looked at the ocean. The storm had passed, leaving behind a sky of brilliant, clear stars. She realized then that she hadn't just saved herself; she had saved him, too.
