Chapter 4 - The New Foundation

Five hundred miles away, in a quiet, coastal town in Maine, Isabella sat on a porch overlooking the Atlantic. The air was salt-crusted and crisp, a sharp contrast to the suffocating luxury of New York.

She wasn't Isabella Marino, the mafia princess, anymore. She was Isa, a woman who worked at a local bookstore and spent her evenings reading about gardening and ocean currents.

She had found peace. It wasn't the silence of the DeSantis estate; it was the quiet of a life reclaimed.

Her morning sickness had finally faded, replaced by a steady, quiet strength. She had found a doctor, a kind older woman named Dr. Aris who asked no questions and offered nothing but support.

One afternoon, as she was shelving a new shipment of books, the bell above the door chimed. She looked up, expecting a regular customer, and froze.

Standing in the doorway was Elena.

The old woman’s face was etched with worry, but her eyes brightened the moment they landed on Isabella. She didn't approach immediately. She waited for Isabella to come to her.

“He’s falling apart, Isa,” Elena said, her voice shaking.

Isabella wiped her hands on her apron, her pulse quickening. “I don’t want to know, Elena. I don’t want to hear his name.”

“He knows,” Elena whispered, reaching out to touch Isabella’s slightly rounded stomach. “He found the shoes. He’s been in the study for a week, not moving, not eating. He’s destroyed the office, the penthouse—he’s destroying the business.”

“That’s his burden,” Isabella said, though her voice faltered. “He made his choices. I am making mine.”

“He’s coming here, Isa. Not today. Not tomorrow. But he has contacts in every zip code. He will find this place.”

Isabella straightened her back. The fear that had once paralyzed her was gone, replaced by the instinct of a mother protecting her child.

“If he comes here,” she said, her voice steely, “he will find out that I am not the woman he married. I am the woman he forced me to become.”
