Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the Estate

Elena didn't ask for details, and Isabella didn't provide them. In the world of the DeSantis family, questions were often more dangerous than the answers they unearthed. Elena, a woman who had seen three generations of men rise and fall by the sword, simply reached out and took Isabella’s hand. Her skin was like crumpled parchment, warm and steady.

“You’re leaving,” Elena stated, not as a question, but as an observation of a tectonic shift.

“I’m leaving, Elena. And I’m not coming back.”

Isabella moved through the grand, cavernous rooms of the estate—the rooms she had once tried to turn into a home. She felt like a stranger in a museum of her own grief. She bypassed her primary closet, filled with designer gowns that felt like shackles, and entered the small utility room where she kept her winter coats. She grabbed a plain, nondescript bag and packed only the essentials: her documents, the ultrasound, and the tiny white shoes.

As she reached the door, Lorenzo’s chief of security, Marco, stepped out from the shadows of the study. He was a man who lived by the binary of loyalty: you were either with DeSantis, or you were in the way.

“Mrs. DeSantis,” he said, his voice flat. “The Boss is expecting you for dinner at eight. He specifically mentioned the blue dress.”

Isabella didn't look at him. She looked past his shoulder at the empty threshold of the life she was abandoning. “Tell him the blue dress doesn't suit the occasion anymore, Marco. And tell him that if he tries to track me, he will be looking for a ghost. I’ve already burned the map.”

Marco frowned, his hand instinctively shifting toward the holster concealed beneath his suit jacket. For a heartbeat, the air in the hall turned frigid. He was trained to handle threats, but he didn't know how to handle a woman who had just ceased to fear his employer.

“I can’t let you walk out with that bag,” Marco said.

Isabella turned. She didn't possess a weapon, nor did she have a syndicate backing her, but she carried the terrifying, quiet resolve of a woman who had nothing left to lose.

“You can let me walk out,” she said softly, “or you can call Lorenzo and tell him exactly what I look like when I’m no longer afraid of him. Which do you think he’d prefer to hear?”

Marco hesitated. In that moment of doubt, Isabella stepped past him. She walked out the front door and down the winding driveway of the estate, her heart drumming a steady rhythm against the secret growing within her. She didn't look back at the iron gates. She didn't see the black sedan pulling into the drive, driven by a man who had no idea his world was about to collapse.
