Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Lorenzo didn't leave. He rented a small cottage on the edge of town, a man in exile from his own kingdom.

He spent his days doing manual labor at the local docks, a penance for a life of predatory leisure. He sent no threats. He sent no flowers. He simply existed in her periphery, a silent, enduring shadow.

The townspeople were wary at first, but Lorenzo was a man of focus. He repaired the docks, he shoveled driveways, he moved heavy loads for the local fishermen. He was shedding the skin of the mafia boss, layer by brutal layer.

Isabella watched him from her window. She saw the way his shoulders slumped when he thought no one was looking. She saw the way he stared at the ocean, his face a landscape of regret.

Her attorney had tracked her down, bringing news of the divorce proceedings. “He’s signed over everything, Isa,” the lawyer said, stunned. “The shipping firms, the construction projects, the offshore accounts. He’s effectively liquidated himself. He’s an empty man.”

“He’s exactly what he deserves to be,” Isabella said, though the words felt like lead in her mouth.

One evening, a massive storm battered the coast. The power flickered and went out, and the bookstore grew cold. Isabella, struggling to light a kerosene lamp, heard a knock at the door.

Lorenzo stood there, his coat frozen solid. “The pipes at your apartment are going to burst if you don't wrap them. I brought the insulation.”

He didn't look at her. He set the supplies on the porch and turned to leave.

“Wait,” Isabella said.

He stopped, his back to her, his breath a white mist in the freezing air.

“Come inside,” she said. “It’s too cold to be out there.”
