Chapter 8 - The Return Flight

I didn't stay in Miami.

While Julian was escorted by his own panicked legal counsel to a local conference room to begin untangling the web of financial fraud he had so carelessly spun, I took a late-afternoon return flight back to Boston.

This time, I sat comfortably in window seat 12A.

There was no tension in the air. No racing pulse. No suffocating dread. Just the quiet, steady hum of the engines carrying me back home to my daughter, my work, and my life.

When my flight touched down at Logan Airport three hours later, the evening mist had rolled in over the harbor, painting the city lights in a soft, shimmering amber glow.

My sister was waiting for me at the arrivals pickup zone with Maya in the backseat of her car.

When I opened the passenger door and slid into the front seat, Maya leaned forward from the back, wrapping her arms around my neck in a fierce, tight hug that instantly washed away every ounce of exhaustion I was carrying.

“Mom! Did you have a good trip?” Maya asked, her big, bright eyes looking up at me with absolute adoration.

I kissed the top of her head, smiling warmly. “It was a very productive trip, sweetie. Let’s go home.”

My sister caught my eye in the rearview mirror, raising a single eyebrow in a silent, questioning gesture. I simply gave her a slow, reassuring nod.

The storm hadn't just passed; we had weathered it, weathered it cleanly, and emerged entirely intact.
